«As he began as a press photographer, Gotthard Schuh knew very fast that he was not made to follow current events from day to day. He decided to dedicate himself to projects intended to become books, and, worked as photographic editor of the most important weekly paper of Zurich. It is there that he published the first images of the young Robert Frank to whom he remained close throughout his entire life. A last great journey brought him to Asia, Bali, Java and Sumatra, a loving journey, amazed discovery based on an incredible nearness with people, without any fascination for exoticism, which transcribed on Islands of the Gods, the luxurious album the success of which was considerable.
His Child playing balls, Java, 1938 made the world tour. It appeared in the great exhibition The Family of Man organized in 1955 by Edward Steichen and, naturally, in the review that he organized in 1967, two years before his death, and which was the first example of plywoods on aluminium editions put in space as objects.»
