Who are you? What do you know to be true? What do you question? What are your obsessions?" When I'm confronted with a person's work, this is what intrigues me. A Photography which is not about photography, or about style, or confined to a category but a photography that transcends all of this. Photography as a revelation of what it means to be alive - for the photographer and the life depicted.

Since his first exhibition in 1999, Michael Ackerman has made his mark by bringing a new, radical and unique approach to photography. His work on Varanasi, entitled "End Time City" breaks away from all sorts of exoticism or any trivial attempt at description, to question time and death with a freedom granted by the use of several formats; from panoramic – which usage he totally renewed – to squares and rectangles. In black and white, with a constant need to explore impossible lighting, he forces the grainy images to create enigmatic and fertile visions. Michael Ackerman seeks – and finds – in the world he travels through, a reflexion of his own intimate unrest, doubts and anxieties. Michael Ackerman joined the agency, and the gallery VU' in 1997. He received among others prizes the Infinity Award for Young Photographer by the International Center of Photography in 1998, the Nadar Award for his book "End Time City" in 1999, the SCAM Roger PIc in 2009. His work has been exhibited four times at the Gallery VU', the latest show in 2011 being on the occasion of the launch his last opus "Half Life".
