Love on the Left Bank
Galerie VU 2013-09-13 to 2013-10-31

Galerie VU' presents for the first time in Paris a large selection of photographs from the series “Love on the Left Bank” from the Dutch photographer Ed Van der Elsken, who printed himself most of the exhibited images. This chronicle of the Post War parisian bohemian youth of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is thought as the first and founding artwork, that marked the beginning of the photographer's career.
Breaking with the period documentary style photography, Ed Van der Elsken comes as one with his subject and his undeniable personal involvement is felt in each of his images. He photographs his generation with an obvious fascination for these young people he lives with and their nonconformist way of life. In a perfect harmony between the form and the substance, his modern screenshots and their almost cinematographic mood suit this avant-gardist youth.
Produced by Ed Van der Elsken at the beginning of the 1950's, this work occupies today a major place in the History of Photography.
